As the bulk of the contamination in a cleanroom settles on the floor it is important that consideration be given to the most appropriate flooring solution in each individual situation - generally speaking there are three types of epoxy resin floor finishes within clean room environments these being high build epoxy resin floor paints, 3mm thick self smoothing high gloos epoxy resin toppings and ESD toppings, also at 3mm in thickness.
High Build Epoxy Resin Floor Paint – typically 0.4mm thick
High build epoxy resin floor paint systems with a thickness equivalent to 12-14 coats of standard floor paint provide aesthetic enhancement and protection to the concrete floor. This type of system is suitable in situations where the concrete surface is in a good fair faced condition with little or no spalling or cracking.
High build epoxy resin floor coatings such as Pumatect are dense and seamless with low porosity, therefore easy to clean and maintain. High build epoxy resin floor paints are available in a variety of colours, allowing you to match your floor’s new look to the rest of the environment.
Usually applied at 0.4mm to 0.45mm in thickness, Pumatect high build epoxy resin floor coating ‘paints’ but does not necessarily fill minor chips, gouges and cracks in the floor surface. High build epoxy resin floor paints are often applied in assembly and light manufacturing areas.
While Pumatect high build epoxy resin floor paint offers good to excellent resistance against many chemicals and is easy to clean, polyurethane resin floor paints tend to offer better resistance to staining and are less likely to be attacked by solvents.
As polyurethane resin floor paints tend to be ‘thin’ when compared to high build epoxy resin floor coatings, a combination consisting of two coats of high build epoxy resin floor coating with a top coat of polyurethane may provide the best system.
Even at 0.4mm in thickness these systems are still ‘floor paints’ and any defects in the underlying concrete, although fully painted, will still be noticeable. Where a high gloss smooth finish that will eliminate these minor surface defects is required, it will be necessary to opt for a thicker system such as a self-smoothing epoxy resin floor topping.
Self Smoothing Epoxy Resin Floor Toppings – typically 3mm thick
Self-smoothing flow applied epoxy resin toppings such as Pumaflow, with a typical thickness of 3mm, provide a smooth coloured floor with a high gloss finish that is often described as looking like a sheet of coloured plastic.
This type of system is suitable in situations where the concrete surface is in a good fair faced condition, even where minor chipping, gouging cracks exist – these can all be completely eliminated with this type of floor finish.
Epoxy resin floor toppings are dense and seamless although structural movement joints that exist within the underlying concrete slab must be reflected through in order to avoid uncontrolled cracks appearing in the new floor finish.
Being smooth and high gloss, epoxy resin floor toppings such as Pumaflow are easy to clean and maintain. Pumaflow is available in a variety of colours, allowing the floor to complement the overall colour scheme.
If required, an ESD variant of Pumaflow is available.
ESD Control Systems – nominal thickness 3mm
In industries where electronic components or volatile chemicals are involved, static electricity can result in significant damage, injury and financial loss. Even when trained to handle static-sensitive devices, inadvertent contact can occur.
Pumaflow ESD self-smoothing flow applied epoxy resin topping, applied at a nominal thickness of 3mm, provides a static dissipative floor with a smooth high gloss finish.
Pumaflow ESD is designed with the highest order of durability, impact and abrasion resistance. It’s easy to clean, smooth, gloss finish makes the product ideal for environments such as electronics manufacturing, solvent and powder filling and handling, pharmaceutical industry, laboratories, etc.
