Heavy Vehicle Workshop Floor Painting

There is no hard and fast automatic flooring selection for heavy vehicle workshop and servicing facilities with products having overlapping properties - the final selection will be down to a combination of factors with cost, installation time, longevity and texture all being criteria to be considered.

By far the most popular floor paint system applied by Industrial Floor Treatments (Stone) Ltd in heavy vehicle workshops is Pumatect, a high build epoxy resin floor paint with a dry film thickness of approximately 0.45mm. This equates to 12-14 coats of ordinary single pack floor paint.

When compared to standard floor paints epoxy resins exhibit far superior physical and chemical resistance properties.

Pumatect high build epoxy resin floor coating is ideally suited for use in heavy vehicle workshops, bodyshops and spray booth areas.

Based upon 5-6 day single shift working system, our experience is that Pumatect high build epoxy resin floor paint will provide a service life in the order of five years plus in heavy vehicle workshops after which time, although not neccessarily worn through, it will have become scuffed and scratched and will have lost much of its original high gloss finish. At that time the existing coating can be thoroughly cleaned, degreased and abraded prior to a single refresher coat being applied.

The first area to show signs of this wear will of course be the areas receiving most traffic - points of entry and exit, particularly where wheels are constantly being turned at the same point.

Inspection pits will subject to localised chipping where small tools, nuts and bolts may be regularly dropped on the exact same point - the use of a small rubber mat in these areas will protect the painted floor.

A typical programme of works for most vehicle workshops is 3 working days based upon:

Day 1 - preparation and first coat

Day 2 - second coat

Day 3 - line markings

Day 4 - back in use

This frequently consists of a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Friday shift can usually be deferred from an 8am start to a 1pm start if need be.
